How can ABLE help you?
Eligibility
The Adult Education and Family Literacy Act (P.L.105-220) defines “adult education” as those services or instruction below the postsecondary level for individuals who:
1. Are at least 16 years of age;
2. Are not enrolled or required to be enrolled in
secondary school under State of Ohio law;
3. Lack sufficient mastery of basic educa- tional skills to enable individuals to func- tion effectively in society;
4. Do not have a secondary school diploma
or its recognized equivalent, and have not
achieved an equivalent level of education.
In Ohio, youth between six and 18 years of age are compulsory school age and are required to be enrolled in school (Section 3321.01 of the Ohio Revised Code). Since 16 and 17 year-olds are subject to the compulsory school attendance law and are required to be in school, they are ineligible for services provided with Adult Education and Family Literacy Act funds unless an acceptable statutory exception to compulsory school attendance is in effect and documented.

OFFICIAL GED TEST APPLICATION PROCESS
1. After successful completion of the GED Practice Test, the individual should consult with his/her ABLE teacher about the test date for the official GED Test.
Methods of Application:
2. The individual should:
• Get an application packet from his/her ABLE site or the Adult Education Office at
Choffin. If the individual chooses this method he/she must mail in a $40 money order along with your notarized GED application. A paper application usually
takes 2-3 weeks to process.
OR
• Apply online by going to www.ode.state.oh.us. The home page of the Ohio De- partment of Education will appear. Click on “GED” on the lower left-hand side of
the page under the “Families” Icon, then click on “GED Web Application Sign In.” A SAFE Account must be established before completing the application. A Visa or Mastercard is necessary to have the application processed within 24 to 48
hours. If a Visa or Mastercard is not available, the application may still be complet-
ed online. A money order must then be sent to the state with “Online Application”
written on the lower left hand corner of the envelope.
3. The individual should call 330-744-8715 after the application processing period has elapsed to confirm that the paper or online application has been processed and
check that it has been approved. If it has been approved, a test date will be scheduled.
4. The GED results are usually ready in 2-3 business days. The fastest way to obtain scores is to create a SAFE account online. It does not matter if an online application has been made or if a paper application has been sent to the State.
The individual may create a SAFE account by going to www.ode.state.oh.us.
The Ohio Department of Education opening page will appear. The individual should click on “SAFE Sign-in” at the top of the page and follow the instructions provided.
He/She may also bring a photo ID to the Adult Education Office between 8 a.m. and
4 p.m. Monday through Friday. No results will be provided over the phone.
5. If the individual has passed all parts the State Department of Education will mail the
certificate within a month.
6. If the individual has not passed all parts, he/she should consult with his/her ABLE teacher.
7. A minimum of 410 points in each section is required to pass. Total overall points
must be at least 2,250 with an average of 450.
8. The individual should note there is a waiting time to retest based on the total score.
