This is the first high school level Aquaponics program in the state! And it is right here in Youngstown!
What is Aquaponics? It is the combination of Aquaculture and Hydroponics. Growing fish and plants in a closed system. An Aquaponics professional will be able to raise fish and vegetables for sale as well as teach others the trade.
Aquaponics is a relatively new field, especially at the high school level, and students will be able to learn construction, biology, chemistry, and business skills.
Students will be able to go right into the field of urban agriculture or they have the opportunity to further their education through college, focusing on environmental science, natural resources, urban planning, or biology.
The program will cover life cycles of fish and plants, teach students management and money handling skills, build community relationships, and provide opportunity for student input in the program.
The students will be directly involved with the development of this program and will have many opportunities to work closely with the community.
