Choffin Dental Assisting Program Wins ODA Award!
The Ohio Dental Association awarded the adult Accredited Dental Assisting
program at Choffin Career and Technical Center this year's Access to Dental
Care Award.
The Ohio Dental Association praised Choffin for its outstanding efforts in
addressing the oral health needs of underserved children and adults in
Youngstown. "There is an increasing number of people who do not receive
dental care due to the strained economy", said Paula Oliver, Dental
Assisting Program Coordinator. "At Choffin we provide comprehensive care
for the underserved population."
Residents from Forum Health and St. Elizabeth Hospital use the Choffin
Clinic every Tuesday and Wednesday to care for 8-10 patients free of charge
each day. The clinic is also staffed by ODA and Corydon Palmer members; Dr.
Paul Olson, Dr. Phillip Leone, and De. Steven Watts.
The Choffin Dental Program has also been involved with Give Kids A Smile
Day since its inception, providing a full week of dental care each year to
underserved children in the Youngstown Area. This past year, $7410 in
dental work was donated during the Give Kids A Smile activities.
Choffin has undergone a $10 million dollar renovation project that
includes adding six new treatment areas to the clinic. "We are very excited
this year because we are expanding our area to provide more services to the
community," Oliver said.
The program is currently accepting application for the 2009-2010 class.
